On June 12, 2016, the biggest attack on the LGBTQ+ community in US history took place in Orlando, Florida at Pulse nightclub. The horrific shooting killed 49 people and injured 58 others. The tragedy took place during the clubs ‘Latino Night’ which meant a lot of people of colour were caught up in the shooting.

In honour of those affected, Director Charlie Minn has created 49 Pulses, a documentary which follows the events of the night and the effect it has had on the LGBTQ+ community and people of colour.

At the time, a lot of attention was aimed at the killer, however, Minn aims to honour the victims of Orlando by focusing on survivor’s testimonies, statements from friends and family. Talking about the documentary to Orlando Weekly, he says “My passion is to make a documentary about the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting in order to honour the victims”.

49 Pulses is not the first time the tragedy has been given a voice. On the recent season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the contestants talked about the night of the tragedy where one queen explains that she was scheduled to perform that night. On the episode, another queen says “We never expect that a tragedy like this would happen in our community”, going on to say “We thought we had created a safe space for our community”.

Since Orlando, the Las Vegas shooting on 1st October 2017 has now been recorded as the largest mass shooting in U.S history. Charlie Minn has stated that he is also making a documentary to in the same form as 49 Pulses, to honour the victims of Las Vegas rather than focusing on the attacker.

49 Pulses will premiere at the Orlando Fashion Mall Theatre and made available to stream on Hoopla Digital on 26th January 2018. Watch the trailer for 49 Pulses below.
