From the set, the visuals, the music to the actual products; the TIMOTHY HAN / EDITION presentation during London Fashion Week Men’s is a creative collaboration between artists, designers, photographers and musicians alike.
Inspired by On the Road, the iconic novel written by Jack Kerouac – “A Road Trip in Scent” is a sensory road trip that retells the travels of Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty on their ventures across North America via scent. This particular journey starts in the streets of New York, travels across the fields of Middle America and ends in the shorelines of the Pacific Coast highlighting each place that the characters travelled to in the book.
“It begins with smoky notes of benzoin and birch reminiscent of the hot asphalt and the grittiness of New York City. Punctuated by forays into tobacco-filled bars where a new era in music is being defined by the jazz greats, our journey takes us through the openness of the dusty cornfields of a Mid-Western America and rises to the cedar forests of a Pacific Coast. The restlessness of the journey finally gives way to the optimism left by the fresh green fragrance of galbanum, citrus and bergamot.” – Timothy Han
Divided into three stations, each stage is a distinct scent and are all combined to create the fragrance titled “On the Road” – the same name of the 1957 novel.
The attention to detail of the presentation did not go unrecognized. Not only covering the sense of smell, the trip also covered the sight, sound and taste.
“It’s going to be very different to anything that I’ve done before. These [fragrances] are all 100% natural scents – the fourth isn’t going to be. It’s going to take a new direction.”
The moving image created by Ben Dunbar Brunton took us on a visual journey with shots of busy streets, asphalt roads, jazz players, wheat fields, whiskey bars, sandy beaches and the ocean blue contributing the sense of sight. The live music by Miro Shot and the voice of Erik Dellums offered the sense of sound whilst the sense of taste was provided with complimentary apple pie and whiskey, which were favourites of Kerouac.
A display of the perfume boxes was also available at the presentation. Wanting to mimic the experience of a book; TIMOTHY HANS / EDITION manufactured the boxes to resemble the exact size of a literary paperback with each edition of perfume associated to limited edition ‘book covers’ photographed by Cedric Christie.
With another fragrance in production and set to be released over the next 2-3 months, Timothy Han, the creator of TIMOTHY HAN / EDITION hints the direction of the new perfume. “It’s going to be very different to anything that I’ve done before.
